In light of recent tragic incidents in California and Paris, active shooter and other violent crime is in the forefront of our country.
At GW the safety and security of our community continues to be a priority. The GW Police Department officers patrol the campus on foot, on bike and in patrol cars. The university maintains access control at all residence halls and uses Community Service Aides at selected administrative buildings. An extensive CCTV network throughout Foggy Bottom Campus also provides the GW Police Department the capability to monitor and review activity in public areas of the campus. We continue to monitor and evaluate the activity across campus and make adjustments as needed to all of our security protocols.
The university works closely with local and federal law enforcement as was demonstrated in the annual Safety and Security training exercise held in November.
Everyone can play an active role in the security and wellbeing of the university community. Students, faculty and staff are requested to take the following steps.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE HANDBOOK
Review and become familiar with the active shooter guidance contained in the university’s Emergency Response Handbook. The handbook is accessible on Campus Advisories.
VIOLENCE PREVENTION VIDEOS
View the violence prevention videos which outline paths to violent behavior, provide methods members of the university community can use to identify warning signs and prevent workplace and campus violence, as well as steps they can take to protect themselves if a violent event occurs. The videos are 30 minutes long and are available to view online on the Division of Information Technology’s SkillPort website.
In the event of an emergency, updates and information will be posted to Campus Advisories (www.CampusAdvisories.gwu.edu). Information during an emergency, or a change in the university’s operating status, also will be communicated via GW Alerts (text and e-mail), the GW Information Line at 202-994-5050 and social media via Twitter and Facebook.
All members of the GW community with a valid GW e-mail address will receive a GW Alert e-mail. To customize your GW Alert settings, visit GWeb Information System (banweb.gwu.edu) and select the GW Alert Emergency Notification tab. Register your cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses in order to receive text and e-mail alerts on multiple devices.
