Code Red Air Quality Alert – 6/29/2023

June 29, 2023

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Code Red Air Quality Alert for the District of Columbia and surrounding areas due to very poor air quality, which may be unhealthy for people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens. Wearing a mask may help limit irritation for those suffering from respiratory illnesses.

Avoid strenuous outdoor activities and keep any activity short. Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them. Additionally, residents can take these steps to reduce exposure:

- Choose less strenuous activities (like walking instead of running) so you don’t breathe as hard.
- Shorten time you are active outdoors.
- Save outdoor activities for days when air quality is better.

A code red air quality alert is forecasted to remain in place through 6/29/2023
