We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely and, based on new information about the global spread of the virus and guidance from our public health experts, the university’s leadership has determined that we need to adjust our international travel practices to protect your health and safety.
Effective immediately, the university is suspending all upcoming non-essential, GW-affiliated international travel for students, faculty and staff. This includes future group trips, spring break programs and individual travel. It also includes requests for approval of future international travel and remains in place until July 1.
GW community members returning from travel within Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-designated Level 3 Travel Warning countries (which today comprise China, Iran, Italy and South Korea) will continue to be required to self-quarantine off campus for 14 days. This requirement applies even if individuals are only traveling through airports in those countries.
The university will not approve future GW-affiliated student international travel through July 1. For students currently participating in a study abroad program, be prepared for the possibility that a program’s status could change at any time. Please contact [email protected] with questions.
Travel Restriction Exemptions
Faculty and staff seeking an exemption from the travel restriction should contact their office’s travel approver or send a request to [email protected] for review. Faculty and staff who currently have arrangements for future GW-affiliated international travel should take the necessary steps to cancel them.
For those planning personal travel during spring break, particularly internationally, we urge you to keep in mind that travel restrictions may change with little notice. Depending on your destination, you may encounter challenges in departing or entering a country, or face difficulties when returning to the U.S. You may also be required to self-quarantine before returning to campus. The CDC maintains the most up-to-date guidance for travelers.
We understand that these travel restrictions and the uncertainty surrounding the spread of COVID-19 may be stressful and disruptive to the lives of many in our GW community, and we want to thank you for your understanding as we take the necessary steps to protect your health and safety. We expect this public health situation and our response will evolve. As it does, we will keep you informed and continue to offer the support and resources you need.
