GW ADVISORY: Event Awareness

Members of the GW community in D.C. should be aware that there are multiple events occurring in the D.C. area this week that may affect travel on or near GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus. The GW Police Department and the Office of Emergency Management will be monitoring for any potential road closures or other impact on campus.

If you are planning to be out in the DC area this weekend (August 28-30, 2020) or planning to participate in any of these events, please remember to be aware of your surroundings, practice social distancing, wear a mask, and wash your hands often. Road closures will be posted on here on campusadvisories.gwu.edu . Expect potential crowds.

The scheduled events are the following:

Black Lives Matter DC is hosting an event on Thursday, August 27, 2020, entitled “Mass Event for Those Killed by Police in the DMV.”  The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Freedom Plaza (1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW).

Republican National Convention In DC

The Republican National Convention will culminate on Thursday, August 27, 2020, with an acceptance speech and fireworks at 11 p.m. on the National Mall.

National Action Network “Commitment March on DC”

Friday, August 28, 2020, commemorates the historic March on Washington in 1963. This 57th anniversary celebration has been adjusted to conform with COVID-19 restrictions. Participants must have a ticket, wear a mask at all times, and pass the temperature check at the 17th Street, NW entrance. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are livestream options available so people can participate in the event without physically attending.
