January 6 - 9, 2025 – D.C. Special Events and Potential for Winter Weather

January 2, 2025

The university is monitoring special events and possible winter weather and remains in close coordination with our local and federal partners. Special events are not expected to directly impact the university and GW plans to remain open and operating on a normal schedule. If the university’s operating status changes due to weather, you will receive additional information.

Winter Weather
Forecasts currently indicate the potential for winter weather in the D.C. area beginning Sunday, Jan. 5, and into the morning of Monday, Jan. 6. The university will continue to monitor these forecasts.

Special Events
The Secretary of Homeland Security has designated the Certification of Electoral Votes and President Carter’s State Funeral as National Special Security Events. Additional law enforcement presence is anticipated in the District in support of these events. Currently, road closures are not expected on GW campuses. However, temporary road closures and increased traffic may impact travel around GW’s Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses. There is no information currently that suggests a specific threat to GW or other area campuses or institutions. However, as with any significant events, we encourage all members of our community to be prepared. Please refer to the Emergency Response Handbook for additional guidance.

  • Certification of Electoral Votes: On Monday, Jan. 6, the 2025 Counting and Certification of Electoral Votes will occur at the U.S. Capitol. Additional information can be found on the National Archives website.
  • State Funeral: Beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 7, through Thursday, Jan. 9, funeral services honoring President Carter will take place in D.C. Ceremonies include a funeral procession, a service at the U.S. Capitol, and a National Funeral Service at Washington National Cathedral. A detailed schedule of events can be found on the official state funeral schedule.
