July 4th Safety and Facilities Reminders

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration - especially in Washington, DC. While the official celebrations are smaller than in past years, the GW Office of Emergency Management hopes you have a safe and relaxing event no matter where you are celebrating!

Celebrating in DC:

The following safety reminders are provided to encourage a safe holiday:

  • Anticipate heightened security and check points at the National Mall. Travel light, take water and be prepared for adverse weather - including high humidity and warm temperatures.
  • Seek shelter indoors during adverse weather and in the event of an emergency. Follow directions from law enforcement personnel onsite.
  • Allow ample travel time to and from the National Mall over the holiday weekend, keeping in mind road and sidewalk closures. Expect delays and crowding at nearby Metro stations, including Foggy Bottom-GWU, Farragut West and Farragut North.

Of particular importance to the safety and security of the GW community:

  • Close and lock doors behind you. Do not allow strangers into GW buildings. GW restrooms are not public access areas.
  • Carry your GWorld card with you at all times.
  • Monitor local media for updates. For information relating to GW, visit Campus Advisories.
  • Report any unusual activity or objects out of place to the GW Police Department at (202) 994-6111.

Celebrating outside the DC area:

  • Many areas of the country are experiencing extreme heat. Seek shade and stay hydrated!
  • Practice fireworks safety. The best way to protect your family is to not use fireworks at home – period. But if you decide to use fireworks, it is important to ALWAYS follow the instructions and safety tips to reduce your risk.
  • Seek shelter indoors during adverse weather and in case of an emergency. Lightening is no joke!

Visit Campus Advisories for up-to-date information relating to GW. Refer to the Emergency Response Handbook for preparedness tips and information.
