The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Moderate Risk (level 4 of 5) of severe weather for Washington, D.C. and the surrounding areas this afternoon and evening.
Timing: Severe storms are expected between 4:00 – 8:00 PM on the Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon, and Ashburn Campuses.
Threats:
- There is a high likelihood of widespread damaging winds, some hurricane-force (>74 MPH)
- Tornadoes are possible with the potential for an isolated significant tornado (EF2+)
- Large hail
Impacts:
- Widespread tree and powerline damage
- Isolated structural damage
- Potential for long-term power outages
- Blocked roadways
Precautionary/Preparedness Actions:
- Check the forecast before venturing out from a reliable source such as weather.gov. Driving could become dangerous due to downed trees and heavy rain.
- Have a method to receive weather alerts and warnings.
- When you hear thunder, seek shelter indoors in a sturdy building or structure.
- While sheltering indoors, go to an interior room on the lowest floor of the building and stay away from windows and doors.
- Prepare for power outages by gathering flash lights and spare batteries.
- Stay away from downed power lines.
- Never drive through standing water or flooded roadways. You risk your life and the lives of first responders. Turn around, don’t drown saves lives.
