Partial Solar Eclipse - April 8th

April 5, 2024

A total solar eclipse will sweep across the nation this Monday, April 8th, 2024. Though Washington, D.C. is not in the path of totality, there will be an 80-90% partial eclipse beginning at 2:04 p.m. and concluding at 4:32 p.m. There will be increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the Foggy Bottom area, as well as along the National Mall where a festival will be held by the National Air and Space Museum in collaboration with NASA, NOAA, and the United States National Science Foundation. Additional details can be found on the event website

Physical Safety Considerations

Please see below for safety tips on and off campus:

  • Be aware of the behavior of those around you and report suspicious or threatening behavior immediately to GWPD at 202-994-6111 or the Metropolitan Police Department through 911.

  • Do not engage with individuals seeking a confrontation.

  • If there is a disturbance, seek shelter indoors until normal conditions return.

  • Observe directions from law enforcement personnel.

  • Make sure doors close and lock behind you as you arrive and depart.

  • Do not allow strangers into GW buildings.

  • Carry identification and your GWorld card at all times.

  • Be prepared for frequent stops if driving around the Foggy Bottom or National Mall area.

  • Watch for distracted drivers and pedestrians.

  • Do not pull over and park into shoulder lanes or ramps of highways to view or photograph the eclipse.

  • Choose a safe location to stop and see the celestial event; be sure to exit your vehicle cautiously.

Health Safety Considerations

Unlike in a total solar eclipse, a large portion of sunlight is still visible which can cause damage to your eyes.

Please see below for safety tips:

  • Avoid directly looking at the eclipse without proper equipment (i.e. eclipse goggles, welder’s glass, etc.).

  • Consider wearing sunscreen if you intend to be outside for a prolonged amount of time.

  • Ensure you have an adequate supply of water and food if you intend to be outside for a prolonged period of time.

  • Refer to trusted websites and other resources for more advice on viewing safety.

We do not have any information that suggests any direct impact to the GW community, and we will continue to monitor the event. However, it is always important to be aware of safety precautions and your surroundings.
