Preparedness Reminders

February 15, 2023

As you know, the safety of our students, staff, faculty, and visitors—our GW community—is always our priority.  In wake of recent events at Michigan State University and elsewhere we recognize the importance of sharing resources to keep the GW community safe.

In the event of an emergency the Safety and Security team will send email and text alerts to the entire GW community through GW Alert.  All GW community members emails are automatically signed up to receive GW Alerts. You can manage your GW Alert account to also receive GW text alerts to your mobile device. In addition to adding your own mobile number, you can add multiple email addresses and phone numbers so that friends or relatives may also receive GW emergency alerts. Visit the GW Alert FAQ for instructions on how to add additional people to your account.

We post the latest safety and security information on GW’s Campus Advisories.  Additional safety and security resources can be found at safety.gwu.edu or download the GW Guardian app for resources at your fingertips. Additional emergency management information from the District of Columbia is also available online.

For specific tips to stay safe during an active shooter incident please refer to the Emergency Response Handbook.  The Safety and Security Team also offers  Active Shooter Training.

In case of an emergency on campus, call GW emergency services at 202-994-6111. If you are off campus, call the Metropolitan Police Department using 911.
