The university is closely monitoring the winter weather forecast for the Washington, D.C., region and will update the community via email, text alerts and Campus Advisories of any operational changes.
Heavy snow, freezing rain, cold temperatures and subzero wind chills are anticipated to begin Saturday, Jan. 24, and last through Monday, Jan. 26. This significant weather event is expected to have a major impact on the Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon, and Virginia Science and Technology campuses; the Biostatistics Center; and the Alexandria and Arlington Education centers.
To prepare for the possibility of a change in the university’s operating status, staff and faculty are encouraged to bring home from campus any necessary telework or instructional materials and any vital personal items. Staff should review their designation-based expectations and discuss any questions or concerns with their supervisors. Faculty are encouraged to prepare for instructional continuity, should it be necessary.

Safety Preparedness Tips

- Stock up on essential groceries, medications, and supplies you may not be able to access over the weekend or early next week.
- Limit time outdoors during storm and low‑temperature conditions. If you must go outside, dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.
- Be aware that driving may become hazardous due to low visibility, strong winds, and icy roads.
- Keep all windows closed and securely locked to help maintain heat, prevent drafts and reduce the risk of damage during high winds.
- Assemble an emergency kit with food, water, medications, flashlights, extra batteries, blankets and any other items specific to your needs.
- Charge all devices and power banks in case of power disruptions.
- Do not leave space heaters unattended or running overnight.
